Human Rights Day – 10 December

Human Rights Day is a highly significant day because it deals, represents, fosters and supports human rights concepts, and ideals, particularly for working to advance human rights and to eliminate discrimination across the world. It marks the honouring of the United Nations General Assembly's adoption and proclamation of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights (UDHR) which was done on 10 December 1948. It is widely known and celebrated by both high-level political conferences and meetings and by cultural events and exhibitions dealing with human rights issues. Different nations follow different themes like the struggle against poverty and non-disrimination as a cause and encourage people everywhere - including the UN family, governments, civil society, national human rights institutions, the media, educators, and individuals - to grab the opportunity of Human Rights Day 2009 to coherently work towards embracing diversity and ending discrimination.
