Women in the entrepreneurial world

VIP women's payThe concept that entrepreneurship is a male dominated pursuit is fast changing. Women, today have carved out a place for themselves in the business world. Gone are the days when women used to contribute without any returns for family businesses. From papad to herbal products, interior decoration, publishing, garment manufacturing and event management women today are involved in everything.

Successful entrepreneurs are confident and optimistic. They can convince others and communicate their thoughts clearly. They have excellent problem solving skills and an independent mentality. The most inspirational story is that of Shahnaz Hussain who started her herbal based business as a hobby on a relatively small scale and has now spread out across the nation and even abroad. Other prominent names include Kiran Mazumdar Shaw (Biocon), Vimalben M. Pawale of Sri Mahila Griha Udyog Lijjat Papad, among others.

A woman entrepreneur who runs a boutique explains, “Running my own business that too from home helps me enjoy economic independence and at the same time maintain a balance between my personal and professional lives. I plan my schedule according to my own convenience. Initially customers comprised of only my acquaintances. Today with the extensive reach of the media and internet it has become very easy to popularize my products. A mix of self-confidence and emotional support from one’s family is all that is needed to become successful.” In fact success as an entrepreneur will give you immense satisfaction for you have been able to do it completely by your own. After all your venture is just like your baby which you have lovingly nurtured and brought up.

The presence of a favourable environment is very much essential to encourage women in their entrepreneurial ventures. An entrepreneur involved in interior decoration clarifies, “Women should be aware of various governmental and non-governmental institutions that are available to support them financially. Many workshops and training sessions are conducted to enable them to acquire the knowledge and skills for effective management of their businesses. This will aid them in decision making and also help them expand their network. They should make optimum use of all resources available to them.”

Empowering women entrepreneurs is important for rapid economic development. We should join hands to eliminate all sorts of gender discrimination and create a smooth road ahead for women entrepreneurs. It is after all beneficial for the nation as a whole.
