Managing shift workShift work is becoming increasingly popular in today’s working culture. This is more common in the health care industry, media, hospitality sector, BPOs and some areas of IT sector. It is important that shift workers manage their lifestyle in such a way that their physical and mental well being is not threatened by working in odd hours.

An HR professional says, “Most organizations where employees are required to work in shifts, impart shift work lifestyle training. Fatigue, digestive disorders, drowsiness and stress are common problems noticed among such workers. They also get less time to spend with their families and cannot participate in social functions. If organizations do not address these issues in time, then their profitability will be at stake.”

As more and more workers are working in shifts it is high time the authorities manage shift work properly. A counselor advises, “The most important thing is that employees should be allowed to take adequate breaks. They should avoid getting addicted to coffee to stay alert all through the night. It is good to consume nutritious and easily digestible food and to have plenty of water and fresh fruit juices while at work. A well balanced diet and the right exercise regime will help them excel in both their personal and professional lives. Above all, open communication with one’s family is most important. The support of near and dear ones will help them cope with the hazards of shift work. Light music can be played at the workplace that will help employees stay alert and enjoy their work.”

It is strange but true that some employees opt for shift work by choice. A media professional says, “I have opted to work in shifts so that I can take care of my personal commitments. Although I work night shifts for only two days in a week it is still a bit hectic for me. Of course, I enjoy reaching work with virtually no traffic on the roads. Moreover, I don’t work on weekends so that I can spend quality time with my family.”
