Labour and employment sector grab increased government focus in 2009

An increase in the National Floor Level Minimum Wage to Rs. 100 per day was among the slew of measures taken by the government in the labour and employment sector in the year 2009. Prominent among them were the formulation of the National Skill Development Policy, National policy on Safety, Health and Environment at Workplace and an amendment of the Workman’s Compensation Act 1923. The upgradation of Employemnt Exchanges was made a priority while the Lok Sabha also passed a bill to amend the Payment of Gratuity Act, 1972 covering teachers in educational institutions.
