Tea Board deputy chairperson Roshini Sen at the 116th annual conference of the United Planters' Association of Southern India (UPASI) said that a bill has been introduced in Parliament for amendments in the Plantation Labour Act, 1951. The proposed amendments relate to change in the definition of employer, family and worker.
She disclosed that the bill includes safety precautions to be taken by planters for storage, utilisation and handling of agro-chemicals. Also, it proposes to regulate the employment of women and children below 14 years of age from handling hazardous chemicals in plantations.
Further, she urged the planters to invest in research and technology to improve the quality and quantity of their crops to ease the intensified competitions with international markets that will spur up with the advent of the Free Trade Agreement (FTA).
