Demand to raise gratuity ceiling conceded

A conference of Indian National Trade Union Congress (INTUC) delegates was held at Kochi on 20th October, 2009. Herein, INTUC delegates demanded an increase in ceiling on gratuity payment to the private sector employees from Rs 3.5 lakh to Rs 10 lakh. National Organizing Secretary Chandrapraksh Singh confirmed that Union Ministers Pranav Mukherjee and Mallikarjun Kharge have conceded to demands and assured to issue proper notification in this regards.

In addition, they unanimously demanded to withdraw the ceiling for statutory payment of bonus to private and public sector employees, including those whose basic salary exceeds Rs 10,000 and payment of minimum monthly pension of Rs 7,000 to all retired private sector workers. Their demands also included banning disinvestment in public sector industry, making workers share holders in industry, enforcement of labour laws even in Special Economic Zones (SEZ) and while prohibiting the sale of sick industries allowing workers to run the same.
