Domestic workers in India earn more than in China
The Paycheck team checked earnings of domestic workers over the world.
According to the results, fulltime working domestic worker in India earns $2.09 gross per hour and $1.78 net per hour. It is more than 13 per cent more than in Russia, where an average domestic worker gets $1.81 gross per hour.
However, Indian wage is still much lower than in both European countries and Latin America. In the United Kingdom, domestic workers have gross hourly wage of $13.60, that allows them to buy 2.4 BigMacs per hour of work. The lowest wage was identified in Tanzania, only $0.68 per hour.
Big Mac comparison is not available for India because Big Mac index is not published there. The wages are stated in Indian rupees, but they are not necessarily comparative due to variance in price levels between country. Therefore there are also hourly wages in dollars adjusted by purchasing power parity that can be easily compared.
