Responding to continuous thwarts by Chidambaram and Pawar on how the NREGA scheme is damaging agriculture, Jairam Ramesh has explained the contribution the NREGA scheme has made to it. Ramesh points out that wages have improved, the gender gap has decreased, the marginalized have employment options, water related projects are encouraged and farm productivity has increased. On the other it is claimed that is a reverse migration from Bihar during harvest season and many anecdotal and circumstantial studies prove it. Ramesh has however said that NSSO data shows that this migration started before the scheme and is hence not its cause.
