India Committee of the Netherlands and Centre for Research on Multinational Corporations came out with reports beginning last year reporting exploitation of young dalit labour in Tamil Nadu’s textile industry that accounts for half of India’s exports. In another report they revealed how Sumangli, an employment guarantee scheme that promises a lumpsum amount at the end of three years, sourced legitimacy for bonded labour. Girls in hope and lure of receiving the lumpsum amount are forced to stay without payment of salaries. The reports have made MNCs like Walmart and and Carrefour to have discussions and enter negotiations with the Indian textile industry.
