On the mark of International Human Rights Day, Decision for Life team had participated in the event organized by SICHREM (South India Cell for Human Rights Education and Monitoring) (www.sichrem.org) at St. Josephs College, Bangalore.

SICHREM celebrated Human Rights Day for just one day; it was celebrated for week long from 4th Dec to 10th Dec

This year, 2009, marks the 61st Anniversary of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights. This declaration affirms that all human beings have the right to freedom from want and freedom from fear. These human rights are inclusive, interdependent and universal.

The inaugural function was held was held on 4th Dec 2009 at St. Josephs College, the theme of the inaugural function was to end Discrimination; they started with the palm print of all the participants which will be kept in the college for the whole week.

 

December 9, 2009: Hunger Fast in Solidarity with Irom Sharimila
Venue: Mahatma Gandhi statue, M.G Rd, Bangalore

 

Sharimila Irom is a Manipur poet and activist, who entered her 10th year hunger fast demanding the REPEAL of the ARMED FORCES SPECIAL POWERS ACT (AFSPA), which grants Indian Military special Powers throughout North-east India to:

 

1. Arrest citizens and enter their property without warrant.

2. Shoot and Kill anyone on mere ‘suspicion’

3. Enjoy immunity against legal action.

 

On the occasion of events to commemorate the International Human Rights Day, on  9th Dec 2009, People’s Solidarity Concerns, a coalition of different Organizations in Bangalore along with other organizations has called for a symbolic one day hunger fast to express the solidarity of citizens from Bangalore to the historic struggle of Sharimila Irom. Decision for Life team participated in the event to join hands for her struggle. The fast came to an end with lighting of candles by all the participants

 

December 10, 2009: International Human Rights Day

The information stall was put up in the college campus from 3 P.M to 5 P.M that would distribute information about human rights, women rights and work related issues, along with these materials Decision for Life concept note was also distributed to create awareness about the project vision and mission. SICHREM had organized various competitions for students on this day.

 

 

At 5 P.M, a rally was organized where students from different colleges and NGOs participated; it started from St. Josephs College to Town Hall in which Decision for Life team participated. It went through the main streets of Bangalore which helped us to publicize the project.

 

 

At the end the rally came to an end by lighting candles and taking pledge to respect all human beings without discrimination of race, color, sex, language, religion, political or other opinion, national or social origin, property, birth or other status.
